Hello good folks of Tom's Hardware.

I have a custom built PC, not really a bad setup i think but lately it randomly shuts down While on load as if someone was pulling the power Cable this never happened before. usually while under a video game or heavy CPU load. Rarely while idling or browsing the web.

Orginally i thought it was a Bad PSU, so i bought a new one and replaced that "600 watt instead of my 700" it still shut down. Checked the thermal paste between the CPU and heat-sink, most of it looked crusted up and not much there, so i scrubbed the cpu and heat sink clean and reapplied thermal paste.

That worked for a few hours till It crashed while playing BF3. Every-time it crashes the CPU feels really hot, I would touch the heatsink and Airtubes. GPU is cool.

So this is where im stuck and need help! ill post a pic from cpuid and Speedfan. is it normal for the -5v line to be pulling in -8?? volts? does that mean i have a short?

ALL note that while having the Fans at 100% it was more stable.

Hardware details

AMD Gigabyte 990FXA-ud3
AMD FX- 8350
Toshiba dt01aca100
Nvidia Geforece GTX670
8 gigs of ddr3 ram 2 sticks.

what psu are u using? it may even though u upgraded may not supplying enough voltage to all the components and under load when they require the most volts may shutdown. Or ur cpu is overheating as u said caused by poor airflow and ventilation, bad reapply of paste. Also what cpu cooler are u using the stock one? U can also try to lower the voltage of the cpu to reduce heat and volts required under load to possibly fix ur problem.

im using a thermal lake 600 w psu, but my 700w 80 bronze was shutting down as well when i had that in there, so i know its not the PSU not handling the load properly. i currently have the stock Heatsink and Fan on my FX 8350 CPU. im looking into a different CPU cooler. The fans RPM seems find but i just dont think its keeping cool enough. Any recommendations?

On a budget cooler get the cooler master tx3 /evo 212, NZXT RC-RST20-01, zalman cnps 5x, or a xigmatek gaia all go for $20-35 and will cool just fine if not overclocking and some good if u are overclocking lol.

Thermaltake doesnt make a good psu unless ur talking about the newer ones like the evo or toughpower, but ones like the tr-2 arent the best.

Did u try undervolting?

I haven't no I could try I haven't OC or under clocked anything before , I reapplied thermal paste using little less then a pea and cleaned the rest off with Iso Alch, Ive also moved one of my other system fans blowing on my HD above and down onto the CPU from the case fan to see if that would help.

That one seems like it would work, but for $50 i would rather get a xigmatek dark knight II, zalman cnps 9900max-b, or phanteks tc12dx but the enermax seems pretty good too.

To undervolt just go into the bios and set the voltage around 1.3v then stress test with something like prime 95 or intel burn test and slowly lower until u hit a bsod and set back to last known working voltage.

If u feel like u dont want to attempt it then maybe watch some overclocking videos and well do the opposite with the voltage and dont touch the clock speed or anything lol or see if u can find a underclocking video

True, my current voltage for this CPU is 1.4, setting it down a notch wouldnt hurt. I just completely took appart my PC and inspected every part throughly, doesnt hurt! I also switched my PSU back to the 750 bronze 80 since the 600 w is just a el cheapo. ive also noticed for the first time ever that my power light and HD light is on, opps!!

Im going to play around with it some more and see if it crashes from this rebuild, if it does ill lower the voltage and post my results. Thanks for your help so far lazyboy!

SO i may have found the issue! A thin layer of dust behind the CPU fan! it was hard to see! it was semi caked into the fan, from the outside it looks clean i would of never seen it if i didn't move the fan blades.

I removed the heat sink, Cleaned the old Thermal paste off, took the fan off and used a iso alch soaked rag and zip tie to pluck and clean the dust out. After everything dried I re-pasted pea size thermal paste to the CPU. Stuck everything back and booted.

temps where 30c and holding, I decided to play a game for a while in window mode to see if the CPU temps would rise. IT slowly did all the way up to 60c, i downloaded this program easytune6 and undervolted the CPU 1 tick at a time to -0.1000v for a total of 1.224v on the CPU. Im using antec formula 7 thermal paste, it may be some time before it breaks in and i could possibly run it at 1.4v like before

HEAT HAS GONE DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY! its holding at 40c atm. once i get my new CPU cooler I will bump it up slowly till its back to 1.4 if the thermal paste doesnt cure in first!

no wonder the stock is absolute garbage

This would work make sure to measure

width of your case to the height of this cooler

recomend you buy this too

better fan will fit on that cooler nicely increasing airflow to 96 cfm instead of 77 you can use the old cpu cooling fan as a case fan if you have a 120mm slot as its a decent fan both fans are silent and cooler is excellent sporting 5 heatpipes which will drag all the heat away quickly
