Here is an explanation of what I think your problem might be.

RAM is Random Access Memory, intended to store commands headed for the CPU until the CPU has time for them. RAM is faster than hard drives and if you run out of RAM then the system will start to use hard drive space so you lose performance. The more RAM you have the less likely you are to run out and the faster the RAM is the better it can deal with commands in and out. RAM clears and looses all data when the system is powered down

Your Hard Drive is where data is stored. Unlike RAM a hard drive stores data intended for Operating system and higher level software use and even if the system is powered down the data will stay on the drive. Your hard drive will store the Operating System you are running, any programs you have installed, and any files that you create or download.
