Did you plug in the CPU? ie the CPU usually has its own source of power, 8 pin connector.

The PC does not go to sleep mode, that message is form the monitor when it does not detect a signal from the computer. Check the connections and make sure the motherboard is OK, look over for any popped capacitors (they should be silver and flat, any that are puffy or have black stuff coming out the tops is bad), reseat the RAM.
