connected old hard-drive to windows XP to get old files from it but no joy said I had to sign to Microsoft give details of broadband account which I no longer have as am wireless so could not get by the start position so put it all back together again and put old hard-drive back among the cobbwebs

You probably mean the Windows Product Activation message came up... that's to be expected if you try booting to the old hard drive from a computer it was not installed on... Try connecting it via USB with a External USB Hard Drive Adapter.
