I'm try to download gta5 on my ps3 which didnt have enough gb so I bought a toshiba canvio 500gb would this work and if so how

The external hard drive? No it won't work. Sony does not allow saving to external storage, if you want to upgrade you'll need a 2.5" SATA HDD.
