directory shortcuts at console

When changing directories on Linux (command line), I find myself entering each new directory and then using the ls command to list subdirectories. When I find the directory I need, I am typing the whole string over again to include the new subdirectory. Is there a way to navigate to new subdirectories without typing the whole path? This would save me a lot of time.

Use the <tab> key - it will finish the filename for you after you enter first couple of characters.
You can also try "mc" - the Midnight Commander.
