well it's 2560 x 1080 .. might be an issue for a laptop... go into catalyst control center and see if it's possible to add a custom HDTV format/resolution... also check what HDMI specification cable is it? - and find out what is the maximum supported resolution/hertz for that , does it have any other video connectors? etc. etc. etc.

control center doesnt give me that option, i dont understand what you mean by HDMI specification cable ( it was rather expensive and is gold plated etc ). the screen has dvi ( laptop does not support ) and display port. thanks for the quick reply. hope im not stuck with massive black bars either side forever :(

well the videocard is fine for 2560x1600 so no issues there... but hdmi has different versions... the older ones might be limited to 1920x1080p @ 60hz ... i think you need revision 1.4 or 1.3 to go higher (im not gonna claim 100% on this but ive read it somwhere) display port should be able to output higher resolutions/ refresh rates (you can usually even run 2 monitors via 1 display port)

what does catalyst control centre say under Properties (digital flat panel) ?
for instance mine says:
Display Name: SMBX2231
Maximum Reported Resolution: 1920x1080
Maximum reported Refresh Rate: 75Hz

-however im stuck on 1080p 60hz max via the hdmi cable - but i can force a higher refresh rate than 60hz using 3rd party software, this is much easier with geforce drivers tho...
you could try this:
