I recently purchased and installed the Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X video card. I went to AMD.com and downloaded the drivers (I think they are beta). However, when I go into device manager (and in CPUID HWMonitor) the video card shows as an AMD Radeon HD 7900 Series.

Why? Have I done something wrong? If it's because its a BETA driver, when will the final be released?

OS: Windows 8.1 Professional 64bit
CPU: AMD FX 8350 @ stock 4ghz with Phanteks PH-TC12DX cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3

Video Card: Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X

It sounds like a driver issue, however do you see any artifacts on your screen, is the card functioning correctly? I think it is because the 280x uses the same drivers as the 7900 series cards.

The video card is fine. Everything is running smooth. No, its because the 280X and the 7970 use the same GPU. I would just think the drivers for the new cards would label them as so.

I could be wrong but the ID is in the video card bios, so it might be they are using the same bios for the 280x as 7970 had and forgot to change the device id...
See if there is a bios update available on sapphires website.
edit i just checked, there isn't...

Do we have any clue when AMD will release a final driver for the R9 280X? Hopefully before BF4?

The drivers will most likely be released before the release of BF4. The drivers will be Battlefield 4 ready. Nvidia is also doing this.

I reinstalled windows and it shows as r9 280x. It has to do with built in drivers with windows and then the drivers it leaves even if you delete drivers.

Another way I found to resolve this is to download the AMD uninstall all software. Run it, ONLY DO CUSTOM UNINSTALL, otherwise, due to you using and AMD chip/chipset, you will lose all drivers. So clean out all VGA drivers with that and restart and re install drivers.

That no longer is needed with the near recent release of AMD's beta patch 14.3 (Thief). You can download it off of their official site http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-c... After downloading this driver, your graphics card will read correctly in windows. Best!
