Looking to get a new monitor. Should I get a 1920x1080, or a 2560x1440 monitor if I have an AMD 6970.

Okay, I'm looking to purchase a new monitor in the next month or so, and I'm trying to decide if I should purchase a 2560x1440 monitor, or a 1920x1080 monitor.

I currently have a HP 23" 1080p monitor (HP w2338h), which would become a second monitor. I also have a 32" TV connected to my computer that I use when watching shows and movies.

My graphics card is a Sapphire AMD 6970 2GB, and from what I understand to connect a third monitor, it would need to have a Displayport connection (or I would need an active Displayport to DVI-D adapter). So most of the monitors I've been looking at are ones with Displayport connections (since the DVI-D adapters seem to be as expensive as the price difference in monitors).

The majority of the time I use my computer for school work - currently a lot of Excel and Word, but also decent amounts of AutoCAD, and some Revit (I'm a Civil Engineering student). So the main reason I'm getting a new monitor is so that I have two useful monitors to increase productivity, and make things easier on myself (the TV isn't in the right position to use as a second monitor).
But I also use the computer for gaming - things like Skyrim and Bioshock Infinite - and with a 1080p monitor my 6970 works well on the games I play. And I would be using the new monitor for gaming as a single monitor.

So I'm trying to decide if a 1440p monitor would work with my AMD 6970 on these types of games, or if it would make a significant enough difference in general usage to be worth it (even if I still have to play my games at a lower resolution).
Because a 1440p monitor is significantly more expensive than a 1080p monitor of the same size.

So what do you all think? Would a 1440p monitor work with my graphics card for gaming? And is the increase in screen space over 1080p enough to make a difference?

Here's some of the monitors I've been looking at:

1440p
Dell U2713HM 27"
ASUS PB278Q 27"

1080p
ASUS VE278Q 27"
Dell UltraSharp U2312HM 23"
ASUS VG248QE Black 24" 144Hz

These are just some of them, but the hard part is finding ones with Displayport.

Also, the rest of my computer's specs if it helps
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU: i7-2600k @ 4.4Ghz
RAM: 16GB 1333Mhz DDR3
GPU: Sapphire AMD 6970 2GB
HDD: 2x WD 1TB 7200RPM - RAID 0

Sorry for writing so much, but I prefer to be specific. Hopefully I got what I'm looking for across.

If i were you i would puchase the smaller res moniter, like the 1920x1080 monitor. The larger res monitor, the smaller frame rate you will get. but depending on the games you play, that could change. So lets say you play crysis 3. get the smaller one. but if you play any valve games or games like LOL/DOTA then go for the larger
