Cannot update new install on Windows XP

I have restored my old Acer netbook to its original factory settings. It has a version with SP3 installed.
After the reinstallation, I click start/window update and then on Microsoft's site, I click "Express" and then I get the message "Checking for the latest updates for your computer" but nothing downloads.
Anyone has a suggestion?

Reboot and try again, sometimes that site has issues. Or try again a day later.

For 2 days I was trying to download the updates and could never get it to work. Then I had to leave town for a couple of days and left the netbook on, I came back just now and the updates have all been downloaded and are ready to be installed, case solved! and thanks for the time you took in answering this post.

sorry not a solution - I have the same problem, I don't even get to the I click "Express" window. I get an error code basically leads to needing SP3, but it is installed, I have removed and reinstalled from MS website.
