What are you wanting to do? That already looks like a solid build. That i7 is at the top of the food chain.

I guess if I were you, I would get a ssd next. Either to put windows on and/or to put games on for instant loading times.

Seeing that you already have that you could either sell the 7870 and get a better gpu like the gtx 770/780 or the R9280X/290X,or you could buy another 7870 next to the one you already have for a crossfire set-up.
I would choose the last option and keep the rest of the money in the pocket and spend it on something else entirely.

As answer to your question, the R9280X is already a very good card.

Two 7870s would be a hair better than one R9 280x. Are you unhappy with your single 7870's performance? Two 7870s or one 280x would be massive overkill for 1080p.

Your system bottleneck is an obvious one. It's your hard drive. I would get an ssd for sure if that was my setup. You can re-install windows on a new ssd and your entire system would be faster, or you can just add one to your current setup and put all of your games on it. Your load/save time would be instant on an ssd.

What do YOU think you need?

Get a 240 or 250 GB Samsung 840 series.
Transfer your C drive to a 100 GB partition on this.
Dedicate the remaining part for your day-to-day works, and your 750 GB for your files and backups only

The biggest problem with crossfiring is stuttering. It's definitely better to have one great card than two good ones.

What's your upgrade budget again? $450?

You could get a 120/128GB ssd AND another 7870 with that.

or

one 120/128GB ssd for windows, and a 480/512GB ssd for game storage

or

You could almost get a 1TB ssd
