My old Win XP 32bit system just died. I'm looking at buying/building a new 64bit Win7/8 system. Will I be able to install my existing hard drive in my new system as a second drive and access it without formatting it so I can copy over files etc...

As long as the drive is good, yes.

Thanks. I actually ended up doing a duel boot duel drive config and it worked great to allow continued use of xp until everything is set up in win7. I'm able to copy files from the xp drive from win7. Will format xp drive once xp is no longer needed and use for backup.
