I bought a Samsung 840 EVO 250GB SSD recently. I'm only getting around 200mb/s read and write. I have it connected to a SATA III cable. Why is this?

List your other components.

Is it attached to an Intel 6Gbps controller (or god forbid a Marvell controller)? Is your bios SATA mode set to AHCI? Was it a clean install or a cloned drive from a HDD?

Ah, sorry about that. I found out that my motherboard only provides 3gb/s. Thank you for information.

Not to worry, it is better to attach a new fast SSD to an Intel 3Gbps controller than to buy an old SSD. The only real hit you take is on the sequential read and write, randoms and everything else is good and they are far more common for most users than the big sequential transfers.
