I think your socket type or wattage is too high. You need to get CPU-Z http:// and check the wattage and socket type of your D945; then check then find the box that your e6420 came in and see if you can find the same specifications of the CPU. If you can't find the stuff you need on the box you may want to check the internet for it. Also, if your e6420 came with a CPU, use that one instead of your D945's cooler. If that doesn't worth either try buying an aftermarket cooler. I hope I helped you.

well, both are LGA775, the chipset on the mobo has to support also e6420.
core wattage is 1.2V
i have Cooler Master fan, it works fine with the d945, but with the e6420 it just slightly moves(likes it wanna start spinning, but immediately stops)
few link(hope it helps)

Sorry I'm getting back to you so late. Could you send me a link to your cooler master if you can find one? I might be able to find a solution for this problem.

If the CPU fan isn't working while the CPU is running, the processor will get too hot. The screen stays black so it doesn't run any programs so the CPU doesn't damage itself.

oh i see, thats clever. Well the fan works fine all the time until I put in the e6420. the weird thing is the fan wants to move but stops after miliseconds. when i turn off the pc it starts to spin in low rpm, like when you turn off your pc and there are few more spins and then it stops..

Your BIOS may not work with the e6420 that's what may be causing your fan not to work with your CPU. Try updating your BIOS to see if that fixes it.

Thank you for posting the link to the cooler... It doesn't seem like it would cause problems at all. Okay, I'm gonna tell you how to find out what motherboard you have. You have to go to http://www.cpuid.com/downloads/cpu-z/1.67-setup-en.exe download the program and run it. Now once you have the program installed and open, go under the CPU and look at the "Package" section. Once you have that information post the motherboard name and I will look it up on Google or Newegg.

I found the solution, your motherboard only accepts the dual-core Pentium D, and the Pentium 4 . You have to buy another MB that supports your e6420 for about $50 on http://www.newegg.com/. That's pretty much all I can help you with man. If you think I did a good job just choose me as the best solution/answer.

well that is what i was afraid of, spending 50$ on dead 775 socket is pointless, better to buy new i5, mobo and a whole new pc..
thanks anyways

I was hoping you wouldn't have to spend any money to fix this problem but that was the only way. Anyways you're probably better off upgrading to an i5 if you're a gamer or video editor.
