Is it a requirement to create a new partition for a new OS?

I am considering installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 8 in my PC.

Not that I don't know or don't want to create a new partition on my hard drive, but just curious. Is it possible for example, installing Ubuntu on my Windows partition? I don't know how this partition thingy works.

I have no experience in dual-booting. Does anybody here has experience in dual-booting Windows 8 and Ubuntu?

Well since Ubuntu does not use the NTFS file system you would have to create a new partition or install Linux on a separate hard drive.
