So I'm going to get a new rig, and thought about getting the 780 but then all of the overs came...
so I wanted to know: when overclocked, who runs better (780 vs 290) and if the 780ti and the 290X are really worth the extra money.
my applications: 3dsMax, Maya, Flash, Photoshop, After Effects, Motion, Final Cut Pro X as well as gaming in 1080p on one monitor as of the moment. thanks a lot! :)

More about : gtx 780ti gtx 780 290 290x

I'd go with the 780ti, mainly because it beats both of the cards below. Also, the 290x is extremely loud, so you would have to wait till the aftermarket coolers are released. You could go with a standalone 780, but you'll see better performance in gaming and recording with the GTX 780ti.

Also, you're aware that Final Cut Pro X isn't available for PC, right?

Theres no aftermarket coolers for the 290X as of yet. I've heard under load its in the high 80s.

The 780 and 780ti however have aftermarket coolers which some are OCed. Though they're quite more expensive.

If you're willing to wait till next year second quarter for 290 and 290x aftermarket versions to come out then get those. Otherwise get the Nvidia cards

Very much aware of that, making it a hackintosh.

most definitely. the 290X and 780/ti are both great cards. Though the 290X has a bit of an edge unfortunately theres no aftermarket variations of it.

any well-known aftermarket 780/ti should do you well

So yeah get one of theNvidia cards if your purchase date is Dec 1

What do you mean the 290x has a bit of an edge? Dosent the 780ti beat it?

Most of these applications are probably more CPU reliant. I'm not sure if any use Hardware Acceleration. Of all those CPUs mentioned, I'd have a look at their Price Performance eg http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html#
The R9 290 is looking pretty good value. And now that the 780s are cheaper they also look pretty good value. These GPUs might be warranted if you also do a lot of gaming or want to pay pretty big bickies for bragging rights. But for the applications listed, they're really not warranted. I do a lot of video editing and would love an i7 4930k. It costs the same as a 780.

Maya, 3dsMax, Carrara and After Effects all use hardware acceleration and exept for Maya, the Nvidia gtx 780/ 780ti really rock better price to performance ratio than pretty much any other one. But since I also game and I'm not Donald Trump I want to save some money if I can. At the end of the day, which card runs faster the 780 or the 290/290x (over clocked of course).

The 780ti runs fastest. However, the price/performance ratio is terrible (like a lot of Nvidia cards. IMO, go with the R9 290X. Performance comparable (at least in gaming) to a Titan and it's very reasonably priced. I don't really know about other uses though. 780 is the cheapest though and it's fairly powerful.

Well getting the R9 290X is really futile at this point, because there are no aftermarket coolers for it as of yet. Only overclocked versions. The R9 280x reference alone is known to reach temps of 90c. The 780ti is unbelivable expensive for it's price. So the 780 is your best bet unless you're willing to wait 6-8 months for aftermarket R9 290Xs to release

Right now all of nvidia's gtx 770 to the Titan give you 3 games which have a combined value of 180$ so I also put that into acount. I can't really wait for half a year or more because my current computer is just too old and rickety ( for real) but I heard that the 780 OCed runs better than the 290x in uber mode, is that true?

The R9 280x is way more powerful than the 770 and is $40 cheaper so take that into account

I am aware that answering at this point might be a bit futile (Since you have most likely already bought a card). What I wanted to mention was that there is already out some 290x and 290 cards with aftermarket coolers, and from the top of my head I can mention Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire and XFX as possibilities if you would want a 290 or 290X with aftermarket cooler. This would ofcourse mean that you would have had to wait a couple of months from the initial date, wich is nowhere close to the time that some here mention.

Hopefully this would be usefull for someone else reading this thread (like me), having the exact same dilemma as Noam had.

I vote 780 or Ti. Both of the Nvidia cards have overclocking headroom that push them to beat the Hawaii cards. That's just in my opinion though. Gaming wise, you will tell very little difference in these cards. The 290 and 290x will be hotter and louder. But other than that, they're really all about the same. I vote Nvidia. Probably the Ti beings you are doing graphics and stuff. I know this is way too late of an answer for the OP but it may help some other unfortunate and lost soul.
