Wow, 2x Hawaii-XT cores in the same reference cooler that goes to over 95c with one core? Good thing AMD is shipping those stock LN2 coolers :p

volcanic islands is aptly named, it will melt your entire system and possibly your floorboard along with it.

Lol? I thought AMD has given up on dual gpu for 28nm generation after what happen to reference 7990. This time 600w alone will go to the gpu alone

Yes, some mobos can support up to 4 single GPU cards aka 2 dual GPU cards

But some people still going to get it. Most boutique shop do this. But last time amd reference 7990 having heat issues when paired for quad fire setup

watercooling would be a system requirement for that card to actually function properly along with a 16x pcie3 slot and a 900w psu.

Well Vesuvius might just be an appropriate codename, as it will probably run as hot as the magma from a volcanic eruption. They're probably going to have to watercool it, or bolt on some ridiculously large heatsink that covers 4 slots and will cause the card to sag inside of three months, even with structural reinforcement.

I would rather get the 790.
Probably would be more efficient and cool.

Whoa didn't think they would do this!

But wait.. didn't amd say that their new crossfire control on the 290/290x allowed unlimited cards?

Does this mean you may be able to crossfire 4 of these.. oh god 8 gpus lol Id love to see how that goes down xD

Haha, nope not happening. Unless you are bitcoin mining, 8 gpu setup wouldn't give any decent gaming experience, regardless of the fact whether its now possible to connect them,

I do have 2x 6990s running as a quad fire setup. The amount of noise dual GPU cards make with stock coolers however is more than irritating so I liquid cooled both of them along with my MB and CPU and rigged it all up to an overkill sized 120.9 radiator to keep temperatures and noise to a minimum.

I can tell you that with a 1200W gold PSU flicking the switches on the cards causes my 1500VA UPS to go into an overload state with only the tower connected as the computer will start to draw more than 900W from the UPS under load.

so anything new about this "dual 290X on a single PCB"?
