If there's any tech heads out there that can shed light on this for me, I would be much appreciative! Thanks :)

I play games like BF4 and other triple A titles at 1440p. I really want a quiet and cool card, so am considering the 780ti, but I'm currently using 2.7GB of VRAM in BF4 and think I would be safer with AMD's larger/wider VRAM. But this generation of AMD are soooooo hot!

Reasons for 290x:
- More VRAM
- Larger memory bus width (512 vs 384)
- Cheaper

Reasons for 780ti:
- Quieter
- Cooler
- Slightly faster

More about : decide 290x 780ti

Wait for the after market cooler on the 290x and then see where the benches are at in comparison.

For the price difference, I think it is worth the wait.

I probably will, but I just can't imagine how much an aftermarket cooler can help a card that's already at 95°C on reference with fan at max. They can either bring the temps down or overclock the card, but at those temperatures they can't do both. At least that's my guess.

AMD has already mentioned there is no problem with the heat, my r9-290 runs at about 94c who cares my old 4850 used to run at 98-101c never had a problem with it and after 6 years, it is still in my the other rig, working like the first day, grab the r9-290x, and enjoy if you are worried, you can install aftermaeket coolers on it later on, but there is no need really

I'm not worried about heat damaging the card, I'm worried about heat forcing me to open windows or turn aircon on :p

Not really, you wont face such a condition, I have been playing for 6 hours on my r9-290 just stopped playing, because I felt tired lol... don't worry about anything, I have always trusted AMD and I have always been fine over the last decade, back then people used to say the same thing about radeon 4850 and 4870, I got myself one, and well it served me well, and after all this time, playing 24 hours a day etc, it is still working

4870 was a beast, I loved that card. But do you find your 290 heats up your room signifcantly?

no not at all, my 4850 was a reference card as well, I am really lucky with these reference coolers lol, this r9-290 is a ruthless best, so many people tried to talk me out of buying it, saying it is hot, it is noisy etc, but I am happy I trusted AMD once more not them, I play at 1080p this graphic card is awesome, every day i give it a kiss when I wake up in the morning, it really appeals to me
