I am starting at university next year, and I am going to do programming. This may sound stupid to ask coming from a guy who wants to study programming, but I cannot make up my mind. I have asked around and some people suggest I buy a laptop, others say that I will do just fine with my desktop. The question is what do I choose? At the moment I am looking at the Asus Vivobook S300 and the Dell Inspiron 3521 I3 Touch, will any of them be powerful enough to handle programming needs? I am in South Africa and running on a budget of about 700 US dollars. What is my best option, or should I just upgrade my desktop computer, at the moment I have an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5Ghz and 4Gb DDR 2 RAM installed in the computer.

Thanx in advance.

If I am upgrading my pc, I would like to install an AMD FX6300 processor, would it be good enough for programming?

Are you programming on c++ or something else.If you are programming on c then you would be good on either of these pcs.Since you are going to college then the portability of a laptop might help.

Sorry I took so long to reply, forgot a little bit about this. I am going to program on a lot of different languages, such as Java, Pascal, C#, C++ just to name a few, I am not shure what I am going to use, but later on I will program mainly in C++ and C#.

I am now interested in the Lenovo G580. The configuration available here has the Intel Core i3-2348M, 6Gb RAM and 1Tb HDD for about $630. I know the RAM is enough for programming, but will the processor be sufficient? And will the battery last long enough to use for university? I am also not familiar with Lenovo, is it a reliable company and will the laptop last me about 5 years. The last question... do any of you have such a laptop, I want personal views on this laptop, is it a good choice?

Hey Einsteinium!

Hello from the United States! There are a lot of options out there for 700 USD.
I would definitely go with a laptop in university if I were you. You don't want to have that awful moment where you need to transport a project or do a spreadsheet and all you have is a desktop.

I'm not sure what operating system your university requires, but if you can use Linux, check out this Asus 1015E. It's very small, cheap, lightweight and performs pretty well. Plus, it's got my favorite OS, Linux. I know a guy who made an entire Mobile Phone Application using Javascript on a Chromebook, so I think Linux could work for you.

Also, from South Africa, you can shop from either the UK or US amazon sites. Both will ship to you.

If you have to have a Microsoft Windows operating system, try this laptop out.
This one is the Asus Vivobook X200CA, around the same price as the previous laptop, and it is also small and light with about the same specs, but it boasts Windows 8 and a Touchscreen too.

This Asus Transformer Book runs Windows 8, and it's cool because the keyboard detaches and turns it into a Tablet.

And finally, if you need a large screen, try the Asus X401U. It's got really good specs, a big screen, a great price and it's lightweight enough for school. Check it out.

It's funny that every laptop in my list is Asus, but you really can't go wrong with them. They've always got the best for the lowest price.

Good Luck! :wahoo:
