Need help changing to bigger Resolution!

Hello, I just recently upgraded from a 15" monitor to a 22" Asus VE228H Monitor that is 1080p. I hooked it up and the whole screen isn't being used. There is an inch of blackness on each side, top and bottom also, I tried changing the resolution to 1080p in my settings and it didn't fix it, I also tried restarting the PC and still nothing. It is trying to stay on the old resolution of my small monitor. Please help!

Do you have an AMD GPU? If you do you open amd catalyst control center and go to my digital flat-panels.Click on scaling options and slide the control until it eliminates the unused part of your screen. Apply and your done.
