Is the GTX 660 overkill for 768p?

I want to be able to play all my games at this resolution maxed out and at high framerates. Is the GTX 660 or the 7870 GHZ edition overkill for that, or are they just right? I can't seem to find any benchmarks of these cards at 720p much less 768p. I have not decided on which card I am going to get yet, I have a max budget of $170 for a GPU. These cards will be paired with an AMD FX-6300 and 4 GB of ram for now, will upgrade to 8GB later. Is this overkill for 768p? Or for some reason would you recommend an even more powerful GPU for this res? Any answers will be appreciated!

Cheers, and Happy Holidays.

Buy a R9 270 instead of the gtx 660. And it would be a overkill. Just good for that res. I would get the MSI R9 270 and overclock it as much as possible and you will be just ok with 768. MSI R9 270 is 179$ at newegg, browse some stores if you can find it cheaper.

The R9 270 seems like a beast card. However I am going to be running most games above 60FPS because I have a lower screen resolution. My monitor is only a 60 HZ monitor. That means screen tearing will occur. The only way I know of to fix that is to apply adaptive vsync, that's a feature exclusive to Nvidia 600 series cards. Unless there is a solution for AMD cards as well... Maybe screen tearing won't be an issue, but I don't know.

Unless you plan on a monitor upgrade you can save some money by dropping to a GTX650Ti/HD7850 class of card, the GTX660 is a bit over the top but has the advantage that it'll handle a monitor upgrade later (and the rest of the specs also look good BTW).

650 TI BOOST Windforce and GTX 660 Windforce are the same price. GTX 660 comes with AC4 and Splinter Cell Blacklist. Even if it didn't come with free games, it would still be a hell of a deal. Overkill, why the hell not.

OR

I could get a really cheap 1GB 650 TI BOOST/HD 7850, and get a FX-8320 instead.

Whats the better choice?
