I am looking into buying a new GPU for my pc. and I am looking at the Sapphire R9 290 and is was wondering if my Coolermaster GX550 PSU would be able to handle it and also I have a Intel i5 3470 CPU. Will there be any troubles running it and also will the GPU bottleneck the CPU and vice versa

Thank You

Yes it should, however Cooler Master is not a well known brand for making PSU's, for that price range I recommend picking the Seasonic m12II 520w or the much cheaper FSP Raider 650w bronze, but it performs nearly as a Silver 80plus.

do you mean availability issues or most of the gamers you know dont use these PSU's i suggested?

Availability issues, I actually have never seen it in South Africa. So in theory the Coolermaster GX550 will be able to handle the GPU and gaming? Because I will only be able to purchase the PSU later.

can you hold your purchase for a couple of days and scout for some other brands that is available there, list it down with the specs and post it here so we could tell you which one is the best, only if this is okay to you bro :D

Sory i am only replying now, with the holidays it is quite hectic here.

The PSU's that is avalible here is:

Corsair
Cooler Master
Raidmax
Thermaltake
Gigabyte

That is about it. So there is no way that the GX 550w will be able to run it temporary until i saved up for a other CPU?

Hi - agree that the Coolermaster gx series is not a good choice. From brands you list I agree with Blackbrd
that you go with Corsair. Also recommend that with a higher end GPU such as the R9 290 you step up from the
CX ( budget) series to at least TX or HX series if your budget allows.

Also, if you can hold off a few weeks on the GPU, you will be better off. The R9 290's in the marketplace now are
reference designs and run hot. The non ref versions should be avail soon, and will offer better cooling, and be quieter as well.

I dont recommend a 550w for 290, this card can draw 255w maximum in load, so better get alteast 600w.. in terms of wattage the 550w can hold your system with a 290, but my concern is, will there be enough amperes in your 12v railing to power this card correctly.

about the brands, pick corsair man, they are made by seasonic, a known brand as well.
