Hi I am planning on doing a PC build soon and the two GPUs I am deciding between is the GTX 690 and the 780. I know that the 690 will run better and perform better than the 780 but it is a higher cost. I have also heard the 690 is pretty loud and having a loud computer is an issue for me. I know that the 780 can run games pretty well and I have heard it is very quiet. If anyone can assist me in making a choice I will be very thankful.

I wouldn't buy today a 2GB VRAM card (the GTX 690 is 2x2GB), especially if you have a 1080p monitor and above. I would get the GTX 780 now and a motherboard that can support at least 2 slots of PCIe 3.0 x8 at the same time, and add a second 780 later when the 800 series will be released and the 700 series will get cheaper. This way you will have 3GB VRAM for SLI.

Is there much of a difference in fps between the 780 and 690? I'm planning on buying Battlefield 4 and Arma 3 as well as some next gen titles. An I prohibiting myself from getting a better experience when getting a 780 compared to a 690?

Assuming you're playing at 1080p, you won't be able to tell any difference between the 780 and 690. ANd like funsurfer said, 3gb of vram is better than 2x2 gbs.

This may help you in your graphics card purchase:

Okay, scratch that link I sent. a 670 out performing a 690 is close to impossible...

This one seems to be a bit more realistic.

Do you have an estimate of about how much more fps the 690 will get than the single 780? Also, why is 2x2gb of vram not as good as 3gb of ram? I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, this is going to be my first PC build.

The 690 is much better than the 780 for now, and it was an excellent buy 2 years ago, but I have seen more and more games asking for 2GB VRAM cards in their recommended requirements and a VRAM benchmark of BF4 that shows 2.7GB usage, so for a new ultra high end buy is better to be above the recomended system requirements, unless you don't mind play at ultra settings with no AA od high settings full with AA.

Also I didn't mean you get a single 780, I ment 780 SLI, but get the second one down the road when it will be cheaper. Even now, the GTX 690 costs $1000 and the GTX 780 costs $510, and 780 SLI >> 690.

I probably should have been more clear and said that I can only get a single card cpu and I am playing in 1080p, sorry.

If that is the case, For a single 1080p monitor the GTX 690 is the better choice, performance wise. You may need to turn down a setting in a future next-gen games, but is it unclear when in the future exactly, because in the BF4 benchmark where a 2.7 VRAM is used, the GTX 690 performs significantly better than the GTX 780.

For a single 1080p monitor, a 780 is a better choice. It will max out any game on ultra for ATLEAST another year and have plenty of vram. A 690 is overkill and to little vram

I go for a 780ti for ultra performance should later u wanna upgrade or get a extra monitor. But do get d 780ti 6 gb version as today 3 gb become a min standard. Btw are you open to amd coz amd got good gpus too? For amd I suggest 280x or 290 or 290x.

In BF4 at ultra settings ,2560x1600 and MSAA 4X VRAM usage is more than 2.2GB, yet the minimum FPS of the GTX 780 are 25 (stuttering gameplay) and those of the GTX 690 are 36 (smooth gameplay). Why isn't it the other way around since it is the 690 that should be bottlenecked by its 2GB VRAM?

It doesn't matter what performance at 2500x1600 is, he is playing at 1080p. And at 1080p, you don't need to spend another $500 to get 11 more fps that you won't even notice, and a gig less vram. *snaps fingers in z formation*

I didn't say you were wrong, just wondered why the cards don't behave logically, hell I even recommended myself a 3GB card in the beginning...

So would you both recommend the GTX 780 over the 690 for gaming at 1080p for newer games?
