120 fps average? and in what settings? ultra+msaa 4x? i don't know if that is possible, unless you go CF/SLI of the newest cards and that will cost quiet a fortune

You would be best upgrading your GPU to a GTX 780 and up or an AMD R9 290 if you want those sort of frames but a question is what resolution and settings are you playing at? If by 2x gtx 660 you mean you are using SLI i would think you should already be close those frame rates depending on your settings

how much is your budget for upgrade?

here are some things you can get for a performance upgrade on BF4
- 4770k + z87 mobo or FX 8350 + 990FX/990x mobo more cores, more performance.
- Windows 8 can improve your FPS 10+ more than Windows 7
- dual R9 280x or R9 290
- aftermarket CPU cooler then overclock it. BF4 is also CPU dependent.

this is not quiet true for what i've found out, i have a 4670k, and whether i OC it or not, there's no difference gameplay wise / fps wise

I'd say both upgrades are pretty useless, your system is already very strong, any upgrade to your 2 GTX 660s would be an honest waste of money since it's already an excellent setup. I guess you could upgrade to something like a GTX 770 SLI or a GTX 780 Ti and stomp games to the curb but at what cost?

A CPU upgrade would be a bit less useless, though you'll probably need a new motherboard so the cost will be ridiculous anyway, about 400-450 for a good i7 4770k + Asus/Asrock mobo.

If you want 120 FPS in Battlefield 4 at Ultra everything 1080p resolution, then go with a GTX 770 SLI or R9 280x CF, if you want 1440p and above then GTX 780 SLI or R9 290(x) CF. And even then you may experience periodic drops in FPS anyway because of your processor, especially in multiplayer

I play competitively so my settings at the moment are 1920x1080 settings all on lowest except for mesh detail on medium and aa on 2x. I would like to get 120 fps at 4x though. Running windows 8, my 2600k is currently overclocked to 4.3gHz and running stable for over a year. I have had too many issues overclocking my 2x gtx 660's. I currently get 80-100 fps. the spiking causes microstutter though.

I would also appreciate advice on system tuning to squeeze out more fps or at least make it more stable. (SLI tuning mostly)

Yeah I agree, actually its only like 2-3 fps difference, and you wont see it in actual gameplay. But on test it can utilize more cores so it can distribute performance better with something like 4770k with hyperthread or FX 8350 specially if you have something running in background or programs that's eating some of processing power.

do you plan on raising your settings? If not probably a small increase like a 760/770 SLI, single GTX 780, R9 270x/280x CF, or single R9 290(x) should do the trick, though I'm not totally sure because I can't exactly try out all this hardware, diminishing returns kick in because of your lower settings so I'm not exactly sure how powerful of a set up you'll need to reach that 120 spot

Edit: what kind of issues are you having with OCing your 660 SLI? if we solve that problem you could probably just kick the 660s up in clocks and see if you can reach your sweet spot

Artifacting, crashing, overheating ( there is about 3mm gap between one cards fan and the next cards pcb.

hmm then it may be prudent to try out a new (bigger/wider) motherboard and maybe some coolers for your GPUs, but I'm not gonna up and recommend it, since my knowledge pretty much ends right here
