24" 2ms vs. 22" 5ms...which will look better at close quarters?

I am a mainstream gamer who has a pretty descent system and am looking for a monitor upgrade. Currently using a 17" 5:4 Dell with 400:1 contrast and 16ms response time, I am looking for anything better!

I'm debating between purchasing an Asus 22" 5ms monitor

It seems like an easy choice and for me to go ahead with the 24", but I can't help but wonder which will look better to my eyes.

I will be looking at the monitor from 2'7" away and I am wondering if I will see pixels easier with the 24" than the 22".

Is it that much of a difference with how many pixels I will see?
Basically, will the 22" look nicer?
Is the 2ms that much more of a pro to go ahead and get it?

Going with what you currently have to either one of these monitors will be a huge difference. Getting a 22 or 24" is all based on your personal preference. Comparing both 22 and 24" even though both have the same resolution of 1920x1080, the 24" will give the user a sense of having more screen real estate.
Between the two you picked, get the 24", but if you want something better then grab yourself a IPS monitor.

i was trying to get you into a 16:10 monitor. the 2 you picked are 16:9. i don't like having the top "cut off" and picture stretched out that the 16:9's provide.

Quick summary: All the monitors you are looking at are equally poor quality and will ALL have motion blur. If you really care about gaming, spring money for a 120hz monitor or one with black frame insertion and/or backlight strobing.

Detailed answer:
There is no way to tell which is better from the specs. Simple truth is that most LCD monitor specs are flat out lies -- especially the response times. Most monitors nowadays have a low enough response time that you can't tell the difference on a plain 60Hz monitor. However, you will still see motion blur, no matter the response time, unless you pick the right type of monitor.



Here are some things that WILL have a big impact on the monitor quality.

1. TN vs any other panel type (IPS, MVA, PLS, etc...) The two monitors you listed are cheap TN quality panels; most monitors in the store are also cheap TN panels. However, the one swifty_morgan linked to is an IPS panel -- it has much better viewing angles than a TN panel. In fact, any panel type other than TN will have much better viewing angles and perhaps even image quality.
2. 120hz or black frame insertion. This will make a big difference in gaming. Little known fact: even if you had a true monitor will all 1ms response times, you would still see motion blur on a 60hz lcd monitor due to the way the eyes work. The only way to get less blurring is to get a monitor with 120hz refresh rates, or for even less blurring, get one with a form of black frame insertion or a light flickering/strobing effect (although this gives you the risk of the old CRT light flickering headaches). 120Hz will reduce blurring, but not eliminate it; only black frame insertion or backlight flickering/strobing (like old CRTs) can potentially get rid of blurring altogether ... but at the risk of headache due to light flicker.


Why response times are a lie:
* Technically a monitor has literally millions of different response times (when a monitor changes from one shade of grey/white/black to another shade). How can a spec that only mentions 1 response time tell you the response times for several million?! The answer: it can't. Not only that, they often pick the fastest response time out of millions and ignore the other millions of others that are much slower!

To bad you'll have to sacrifice one feature for the other.
120Hz then it's TN, because IPS currently can't do 120Hz.
Get IPS then you can't run 3D gaming (Nvidia 3D Vision*), because 3D needs a monitor with very fast refresh rate and minimum is 120Hz. Btw, that 23" is also a IPS.
* Not all 120Hz screens will work with Nvidia 3D Vision
