As asked above:
specs:

i7 3770k
Currently 1 GTX 760, buying a second one, and a 1440p monitor if it can handle it
16GB 1600MHz RAM
2TB HDD ~7200RPM
Asrock z77 extreme4
750W EVGA 80+ Bronze certified PSU

Thanks for your help in advance!

Again, My question is will 2 of my graphics cards be able to run a single 27" 1440p monitor playing GPU intensive games at playable framerates (45+FPS)?

Solution

well you have your answer. with a second card and double the pixels it will run a bit...

It could, but any game will suffer pretty bad, because most games won't take advantage of SLI, so instead of spending 600$ on 760's get a single gtx 780 "TI" is made for gameing above 1080p, hope that helped.

maybe not at the highest settings, but yes, should work. are games running ok on the gtx760 with 1080p now?

think of it like this... the new monitor is about twice as many pixels as a 1080p monitor. sli 2gtx 760 is about 50-75% faster than single card. so if you now get ... 55+ fps in your games you will get 45+ on the new config. it's as simple as that

edit: of course sli performance depends on the games. not all are optimized the same

Yes in bf4 i put my vsync at 96 hz to minimize tearing with no drops at all even with 2xmsaa with 110% resolution. You will need to overclock your monitor though 60hz is not smooth. I got my xstar from accessorieswhole on evay for 289. Free shipping no dead pixeks or back light bleed or any import fees. Came super quick. Look at qnix or xstar. I have the xstar and they will overclock to 120hz easily

Im not sure if you will hit the your 2gb limit with 1440p though. I was @1.6gb on 1080p .

It can but not at the fullest settings, I suggest you buy the 4GB version as it will be useful with 1440p. To compensate ft that you can replace the i7 3770k with an i5 4670k and downgrade to 8GB RAM if not doing any heavy Photoshop/CAD work

im pretty sure this is a misconception. SLI is handled at the driver level. It has NOTHING to do with games. Now some games may not run as smooth on SLI, but that's due to driver issues which usually gets patched. I run SLI and any game I've played from bf4 to crysis run nicely.

Currently a single GTX 760 I get 45fps on my most GPU intensive game (Arma 3). 60+ on others. But, 1440p is very attracting for me. So I know it means 1 more of these cards or something even better.

well you have your answer. with a second card and double the pixels it will run a bit slower than this. not by much, on average i'd say... 25-50% less again, depends on the game and the sli support. good news is they keep updating/fixing/improving the drivers so under best case scenario you end up with 90% scalability from the new card.

with a bit of lower detail you'll be playing 1444p no problem.

also, make sure to get the same model second card, sli needs identical cards to work.
