I am going to add a network to my home. I have satellite internet service.
Items of consideration
1) I already have a 10/100/1000 wireless ASUS router
2) I want to have the ability to hookup around 15 wired devices to the network
3) I want the wireless router at one end of my house (so it can transmit the wireless signal into a detached building) and a switch in a wiring closet on the other end of the house where all the individual cables meet from the various locations within the house.

I have read that CAT5 has a max length of around 328'. My longest run of CAT5 will be about 200'.
My signal comes into my house...I hook up the router next (probably 10' from modem). I then have to run a cable from the router into the wiring closet at the end of the house (200'). I suppose the switch has an "input" port along with a quantity of available ports?

If I run a cable from the switch back to the location of the router (200') it's total length would be 400'. Is this too long.....or once I plug into the switch...does the cable length limitation start over?

Is there any need to locate the switch as close to the router as possible (or would it be okay to locate it 200' away)?

Thank you for your responses.
