Help - Old Tech meets new stuff... crashing my mind...

I have a good acer p221w (22" LCD) that will do 1680X1050 with input labeled VGA & DVI not DVI-D

The monitor is fine for me as I'm running a '93 DELL Dimension 9250. Don't laugh please. I would like to continue with the monitor as It's paid for but I'm upgrading to a new AMD based PC with a video card that has VGA/DIV-D/HDMI.

My question is can someone explain the differences of DVI-D & DVI and can I go from the card DIV-D to my monitors DVI input or do I have to stay with VGA or get a newer monitor?

Thanks

A monitor that accepts DVI is only concerned with the digital signal from the graphics card. All DVI ports produce that, so it will work with any DVI port on the graphics card.

DVI-I produces both digital and analog signals, so it can be used to run a VGA monitor using just a passive adapter. The port has a '+' shape in it.

While DVI-D produces only digital signals. The port has a '-' shape in it.

Thanks so very much... One more question if I might... I'm going to a built PC with a AMD A6 5400K. They call this a APU type because it has a dual core with one core for graphics. I'm planning on using a GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3P but find that there is no on board video output even though the AMD A6 CPU claims graphic processing. I'm again confused,... so I still need a slot based video card???

The A6 5400K has two CPU cores and an additional graphics processor. It uses the socket type FM2

The GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3P has an AM3+ socket that will not accept the A6 5400K.

Either get an FM2 board or an AM3+ processor.

Got it... maybe the GA-F2A75M-D3H which is a FM2 and yes it has the missing video out..

Thanks again.

So all I would then need, with the correct board, is a DVI cable to push this monitor to 1680X1050 ?

Any of the video ports will be able to run 1680x1050 without loss of quality.

I'm off to bed now, it's 1AM here in Singapore.

If in future you get a graphics card installed, remember to have the monitor connected to the graphics card and not the motherboard.

Merry Christmas to you.
