Why am I getting Best Answer for threads several months old?

Not that I'm complaining. Just curious to know why this keeps happening. For example, I just received credit for the Best Answer to a thread that's almost 10 months old. Is there a mod going around rewarding people for answers in threads? Is it just a friendly gesture because of Christmas? It's happened 3 times this week.

Maybe some people just take a long time to select the best answer, or maybe moderators have gone around Solving all the Unsolved questions.

In that particular case, it was a Mod who decided to set your response as a Best Answer. He must be going through and closing old threads, open threads of that subject matter can tend to attract spam.

But yes, right now there are a few guys employed by Best of Media (the company that owns Tom's Hardware) trawling through old threads and setting Best Answers.

As manofchalk mentioned, we have some quality control guys on the back end taking a look at some legacy threads at 90+ days or so, ensuring Best Answers are being set where Best Answers are due. It's tough to get original posters to return to set Best Answers sometimes, so it's up to the mods, staff, and fellow users to make sure those happen and credit is given where credit is due.
