I currently have a Dell XPS 630i desktop with a Q9400 at 2.66Ghz and an AMD 6870. I've noticed gameplay on some games is terrible, which I can attribute to the CPU. I also have a newer i7 laptop with a slower GPU (nvidia 640m). Basically, the desktop plays most games I like terribly due to the slower CPU, and these same games play great on the laptop, due to the newer CPU.
I just purchased a i7 4770, 16GB DDR3, and newer HDD (sata 600 compared to my XPS's 300). I also plan to keep my 6870 for now, as I feel it's still a good enough card(I know it's old) for what I play. I'm not a hardcore gamer.
My question is, is my purchase justified? I can assume the CPU intensive games will improve drastically (source games, Black Mesa, WoW, etc), but for games that are more GPU intensive, will I still see some improvement with the new architecture? For example, I can play Crysis 2 at Ultra on my Q9400 at 1080p and get a pretty good experience (a little laggy at times, but overall good). With the same card in the new rig, will I see any improvement at all?
If this should go into a gaming forum, I apologize. Thanks.

This is the test system with the graphic card. Compare and study the results

Since you are having good processor. Its better to change the gpu go get better fps during games

Ok, thanks. My question really is though, will I see a bump overall in games between my old and new systems? I know I won't get a smooth framerate on beefy games like this, but really curious if the new system will allow my 6870 to "breathe" better. Thanks. No probs. Your card still can perform well. Just keep the drivers updated and tweak it a bit.

Thanks, but is "well" better or the same as my old system for GPU-intensive games?

It depends. But overall it should give a better performance than the older one. Trust me

What is your upgrade budget?
This q9400 sounds like it can do the job still (remember this thing is a Quad Core), just gotta up your GPU. Also 16GB of memory is overkill 8GB is more than enough for gaming. If you’re going to do 1080p gaming you will at least need a GTX 760 get 60+ frames. Along with this card you might need to up your PSU (if you have anything less than 500W).
Best Luck

I went from a Q6700 with HD7870 to a 4770 with the HD7870. At the same settings in Battlefield 4 I get nearly 20 fps increase!
