Older computer guys: Locking heads on early 90's HDD, in DOS?

In about 1993, I had someone build me a computer. It cost over $1000 back then, and just for a little nostalgia, here were its specs:

p386
4MB RAM
170MB HDD
Windows 3.1 / DOS
And an amazing...$300, top of the line, 4X CD-ROM drive.

Anyway, the guy that built it for me showed me how to do quite a few things on it. One was locking the heads on the HDD so that it could be moved around without breaking. I think all new computers do this today, but back then it was a command you had to issue in DOS. To unlock the drive, all you had to do was plug it back in to the computer and turn it on, it would unlock itself automatically.

I have tried finding any information about this for 20 years now and can't. It's almost like I imagined the whole thing. Is there anyone on here that knew a lot about computers back then that can help me out? Thanks.
