The 990fx is an identical piece of silicon to the 970 , and to the 990x .
The difference in number of pci-e lanes is down to binning and licensing .

Performance is identical , if the set up is identical . In practical terms that means changing the nb speed of the 970 up by 200 Hz . Way too easy .

But yes if you want SLI or crossfire you use a 990X or FX
