Hi all.

I have been out of pc gaming for about 8 years. just picked up a cheap pc to try and get back into it.

I have a e5700 3Ghz
4 gig Ram with 3.3 usable (not sure why that is?)
and a Nvidia GTX 260

it seems to be running ok but would maybe like to overclock it but im not sure if this is safe as i havent touched computers for a long time. Would i be safe overclocking to say 3.3 GHZ with my standard cooling? I dont want to push it to hard but would just like to try and get a little bit more from this processor.

Any help greately appreciated.

Thanks

Andy

1. i wouldnt recomend it
2. some ram is reserved for the os
3. gtx 260 is rather old

do you have a budget so i can recomend some gaming parts to put in also need to know the motherboard

I only bought it to get my back into gaming. Not sure what motherboard it is.

Its playing games like CS GO ok so im gonna stick with it for a month and was looking at upgrading to an i7 so if you could suggest the components i need to upgrade that would be fantastic.

well i7 is miles out the league due to the socket doesnt support it
doing this cheaply is fairly easily though

but i would need to know the motherboard first to suggest the processor but since your using a newer core duo its possible it will use a decent quad

put all that together im pretty sure your board will support quad core

use this and give me a few screen shots of what it tells you

this tells you what all your components are which will help me look up to see what i have recomended is compatible just go down the side list

Most people on here are considered to be in usa or uk But it helps if the person states uk or usa

You would be better with a new case for better airflow
my recomendation since your uk

in terms of increasing performance it will be a fairly big jump

upgrade
case for better airflow
psu to support new parts
gpu better then your old 260
then cpu and cooler jump in performance in quad related games
the os ( later and ram) new os rquired to get 8gb of ram

Thanks so much for ypur help . My only question is . Will that be outdated still?

Just wondering if it may be better to cough up more cash for a whole new setup?

Only asking as I have no clue anymore so would rather just go on your guys advice lol

And if not can I upgrade slowly. For instance buy just the cpu & cooler today and the rest next month?

Sorry for all the questions!

Sorry for not reading properly iust noticed you already ordered it . My case is from an old gaming pc ajd has a big mesh on the front for air intake I assume so not sure if this would be adequate anyway? Will post pics later

core duo is fairly outdated it depends on what settings your trying to achieve

it be better in the long run to go for a completely new setup pm me a budget of how much you are aiming to spend and what settings you hope to achieve and if power consumption is a issue or not in terms of electric usage.

however you can use

harddrives
and dvd drive
again to cut down the costs

thats my problem . im trying to spend as little as possible but dont see the point in buying something not good enough lol what would you say the average price would be to handle the new games well?

i would just upgrade your core duo rig the cost would be 540-600 pounds to fully get a high end rig going

your rig isnt that bad core duo like i said is aging but isnt entirely hopeless when its quad core

what is really hurting you is gpu and ram speed and cpu the rest are not bad

first 3 to upgrade
power supply
case
gpu
cpu

ram 2x2

cpu cooler
additional fans

this is best upgrade path

forget buying a new os wait till you have enough to get a new board and more ram and newer cpu before replacing

the ram i have linked is alot faster then your old ram and will require tweaking in your bios to get to run 1333mhz with newer core quad cpu

game settings you would get in newer games medium and depending on game high

when you replace the ram sell the old sticks

Ok cheers guys. As my pc was an old gaming pc is it worth me showing you the case? Ill try get a photo. Also is there any chance my current psu will be ok? Ill take a lool and tell you all what it is

you can show the case in a photo preferably a few snaps of the fan bays and list of how many there are

you can look at the psu wattage and make some older ones are decent

Ok, its an Old system I would NOT upgrade any of it............... (motherboard, processor, case, power supply.....operating system).

OC : with that FoxConn motherboard and stock cooling, don't even think about it. Won't buy you all that much in FPS improvement anyhow...

NOTE: your system says 4Gb RAM (3.3 Gb usable) because it is a 32 bit version of the operating system. It can not fully use all 4Gb. This is normal. In the future you'll certainly want a 64 bit version of the OS.

If you want to improve your FPS in games, let's just focus on the GPU. You can boost your system performance the most and straight away by just replacing the GPU. AND, in future, you can keep this GPU for the new system....

Provide the brand/Model of powersupply so we can be sure it will work but you can most likely use:
- GTX 650Ti or GTX 760 in the system (these will let you have plenty of fun gaming with the computer "as-is"...)

NOTE: you'll also need to get a tape measure to see what length of GPU card will "Fit" into your system case...

i have been offered a Q6600 quad core that is slot 775 . its free so should i swap with that for now?

and should i install 64 bit windows as another computer in the house already has it

do that for now as that will make gaming a decent jump from the duel core

but before you swap it

get some
cleaner
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SHL-ISOPROPANOL-Isopropyl-Alcohol-Shipping/dp/B003D8QFR8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389449317&sr=8-1&keywords=isopropyl+alcohol
mx4 paste
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/offer-listing/B0045JCFLY/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new&qid=1389449345&sr=8-1

clean old cpu cooler with cotton swabs and iso alcohol solution and make sure the cpu you get is well cleaned

dry of with coffee filters and apply mx4 paste to cpu use a plastic gift card and spread it evenly dont lift the card.
then attach your old cooler on it

this will do till you can get a better cooler

also what is your gaming case look like ?

and core duo isnt too old its old enough but not hopeless for gaming
