What I'm looking for are some recommendations for tools I can use on a mounted drive (externally, usb 3.0 hub). I work for an IT firm, and a lot of my time is spent working on infected/"not working" machines that come back. Sometimes I can get them to boot, sometimes I can't. My laptop I take onsite is primarily running Ubuntu 12 (any other recommendations of distributions for what I'm using it for?) and I want to be able to figure things out by docking the drive and backing up data/scanning the drive that way. I've been mainly using Hiren's boot for the past couple of years, but am trying to get away from it. The main reason I want to do this through a docked method, is I've recently been coming across machines having hardware issues and want to be able to backup data with my dock and an external I bring.

tl;dr - best backup/docked HDD scanning tools for an ubuntu user?

Hard drive exam and file recovery testdisk, be very careful with it, read the instructions.

Thanks! I'll look in to these. I'll take caution with the last one.
