Idle chit chat

it is a tech website, could talk about tech, computer builds, what parts work together, home theater, etcetera.
in any case "chit chat" is more suited for real-time chat than forums.
provided you can have a decent topic (such as new technology, windows, etc) or make it an informal learning tool (ie a discussion on the do's and don'ts of of computer building, how to pick out parts for a budget, etc) and set up a convenient time... i think it would be great to have a few people sit down for a bit of chat time.
its quite easy to set up a perfectly free 100% web based irc room which can support as many users as needed. in fact i often do the same to help new users understand tech and pick out computer parts.
as far as idle chit-chat like... what football team is better or will the world end in 2015... not my cup of tea.

would you be one of the "experts" or one of the "students" ?
we should have perhaps 1-2 experts and perhaps 3-4+ students.
i have no problem sitting down for awhile as an expert and setting up a room for it but i dont want to do any advertising for it. perhaps you could start up a thread in the /systems area stating that there will be a "DIY computer building class" hosted by "web irc" on a certain date and time and that all people are welcome to attend. i'd say that the instructors should be kept to a minimum though since having too many can cause in-fighting amonst them (dont believe me.... look at the /systems/ area... its a mess at times)
anyways... i'm up for a class on "how to pick computer parts" and "how to put them together" and "what did i do wrong" super info session.
i could probably even find a way to set it up for voice chat as well if you think it would be a hit.
---
before starting the thread on that though i think we should discuss it in this thread for awhile to work out the details...
let me know your thoughts.
i suppose i should say that i'm in the USA, eastern standard time (GMT minus 5:00) and that i prefer nights after 5pm (17:00) in est and prefer no later than 12am (24:00) though i could work around it if required. those are just my preferences.

i'd prefer the topic is stated before since pc-repair (diagnosing and fixing issues) is often involving very specific issues and triggers so isnt really something that can be generalized very well.
however, if you have a few pc repair topics that you would like to discuss... i dont see an issue in bringing it up.
i'd prefer if we can get a bunch of people involved since the more people you help at once the more usefull your time is) but at this point its just a discussion on what we could do. thats why i said the specifics would need to be worked out.
if you have a very specific "pc repair" question though you could list it or start a topic on it. sometimes such things require lots of back and forth and research time and arent always best for instant in your face answers.
anyways... just some thoughts. people dont have to stay for the entire sessions but yes i would like to have multiple people involved and i'd prefer mostly pc parts picking and assembly of a pc however i can cover some basic pc issue diagnosis as well. i suppose i can cover case modding and water cooling as well too if it gets requested. (just dont come asking how to solder a chip onto a pcb, how to reball a ps3 chip or other highly technical issues best left for repair technicians or very strange unique hard to diagnose issues without a clear answer. as that would waste alot of time)
anyways... i think thats it.

Best solution
@compgee
that can be discussed as well. simple pc repair or upgrade things are more than capable of being discussed.
i already stated that i'm more than willing to spend a bit of time as one of the "instructors" (for lack of a better term) but we need to get some "students" (again... for lack of a better term) to join the discussion.
i've been helping out people for quite awhile over irc... normally 1 on 1 with new builds and helping them figure out what would work best for them and explaining current technology so its not a huge stretch for me to branch out to other subjects or to have multiple users in the same room.
i just would prefer not to do all the footwork advertising a date/time, finding out if we have enough interested parties involved, putting together a topics list... etcetera.
as far as actually answering the questions... i have no problem with that

a thread should probably be created in /systems/ then advertising a time and date. i'm on eastern standard time so anything within reasonable hours is fine with me normally.
that would likely draw the most people. the thread would need to be kept active so users see it (since its a bustling forum area)
general topics should be listed such as:
-how to pick computer parts on $xxx budget
-how to assemble a computer
-how to diagnose simple problems
-basically anything else we listed here
keep in mind that if we get a large turnout it might not be possible to cover all topics in one session.
i'm planning on using an web based irc server. provided there is interest i'll scout out the best one to use (normally i use freenode... but perhaps there is a better option)
if you start a thread for advertising please link it here so i can see it as well. thanks.
