There are many cards on the market you have to enquire which ones are the best.

Best consumer GPU Nvida: Geforce GTX TITAN

Best consumer GPU AMD/ATI: R9 290x (I think?)

In my experience, I'd go for AMD rather than NVIDIA.

Don't listen to people like him.

Chose for your self which is better AMD and Nvidia are both equal in strength but not in price
AMD tends to be cheaper.

You make the decision.

If you are a gamer trying to get the best preformance, then go for AMD because its less money for more power. If you are trying to record your gameplay, go for nVidia because they have ShadowPlay which is the best recording software (free).
The best "Mid-range" card is the Radeon R9 270X. If you have a little less money then the R9 270 will work.

either most people don't read, or...

by "professional", does the OP mean workstation CAD, rendering, animation work? if that's the case, no GTX or HD is right. only ONE person here so far linked FirePro and Quadro cards, which are the actual PROFESSIONAL cards.

and if that's the type of card, then I think a lot will depend on what the software is made to work with, what's validated, what's supported, and not by which card benchmarks best on BF4 or has awesome FPS rates on Crysis3.
