Help finding a good but relatively cheap monitor

Hello everyone,

I've been looking around at monitors and quickly realised I don't really know what I'm looking for. I'll be using it for gaming, recording gameplay, and video editing and possibly will be looking to invest in a dual monitor setup in the future, but for now just a single.

I've been looking at the LG 22EA53VQ 60Hz 21.5" which has been recommended by two friends, its only £100 and is apparently very good.

I'm unsure of the advantages of going for a higher hz monitor, in terms of price I would rather keep it below £200 and I have no brand preference.

My GPU is the Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB

That is a good monitor, but bigger is better. 60hz= 60 fps. More hertz means more fps. You want 1920x1080. It has a large screen, fast response time, high refresh rate.

Considering my GPU will be able to achieve easily over 60fps on the majority of games. Am I essentially wasting its potential by sticking with say, a 60Hz monitor. Then again my eyes cannot see past 30fps so is there really any loss of quality?

Even if you can't see past 30 fps, you notice the difference, because your eyes are not synced with the monitor. 144mhz monitors look much better than 60. You are wasting some potential, but not much because FPS isn't all that matters.

I love my BenQ GW2450 its only 60Hz 24'' but performs amazingly. only about $160.

That is a nice monitor, but he can get one with a 1ms response time and a 144hz refresh rate, which is much better in every way.

The ideal screen size for 1080p is 23"

Worth spending a little more for the extra real estate.

True its just an option and as long as he doesn't use Vsync he wont be capped he just wont visually be able to distinguish an FPS over 60 which is still very fast.

You can distinguish it. Your eyes are not synced up with the monitor, which means you don't see it perfectly. Higher refresh rate minimizes that. Imagine spinning a wheel split into two equal halves and dropping a ball onto it, sometimes the ball lands on one half, sometimes it lands on the other. Think of the wheel as the monitor and the ball as your vision, not every ball will land in the part you can see.

Its easy to tell apart a 120Hz from 60Hz provided your getting well above 60fps. Looks a lot smoother and largely eliminates ghosting and tearing.

Worth it if you have a strong card like the 280X.

Price seems reasonable (£140) and it has a 2ms response time. I can't seem to find the Hz though.

If anyone could reccomend a 120Hz monitor that would be great.

It's a nice monitor, but probably only 60hz. Anything more than a 60hz is pretty rare besides 75hz. The one I linked earlier is probably your best bet, that one is an incredible monitor.

That's a 60Hz TN panel.

A high sped 120/144Hz monitor probably costs well over £200.
