Hi.

I have a Dell XPS 8300 running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) which has a 0Y2MRG motherboard with:

2 x Samsung 2GB DDR3-SDAM (1333 MHz)
i7-2600 @ 3.4GHz (4 cores)

it also has an ATI Radeon HD 5670 card

I use the PC mainly for simple stuff like web browsing, word processing and a bit of development (VB.net and some other bits and pieces), along with some gaming.

The motherboard has two free memory slots and, as far as I can tell, can utilise up to 32GB of total memory.

I don't have huge problems with speed, unless I have a lot of stuff open, but I'm wondering how much bang I could get for my buck with some more memory.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Increasing the amount of RAM (within the constraints of the motherboard & the OS, of course) is the single most effective way to increase a computer's performance. Upgrade it from 4 to 8 GB (for example) and you can't fail to notice the difference.
