I'm getting either a used i3 3220 or new Pentium G3220 and a BitFenix prodigy MicroATX Mini Tower from friends and will appreciate assistance on these two build options, please. The PC will principally be for work purposes; very little gaming, if at all. It will be used for entertainment too (XBMC, Netflix, BBC Iplayer, HD 1080P content). My budget is around £300. Which option should I go for and why?

I have this: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/expositouk/saved/3oKh

Intel Core i3-3220 3.3GHz Dual-Core £80.31 Asus P8H77-M LE Micro ATX LGA1155 £54.99 Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" SSD £54.98 Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB 3.5" 5400RPM £37.00 BitFenix Prodigy M Arctic White MicroATX Mini Tower £74.59 Be Quiet 450W ATX12V / EPS12V £56.94 Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer £11.98

and the second option is this: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/expositouk/saved/3oKx

Intel Pentium G3220 3.0GHz Dual-Core £39.98 Asus H81M-A Micro ATX LGA1150 £40.98 G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 £69.98 Corsair Force Series GS 128GB 2.5" SSD £87.71 Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB 2.5" 5400RPM £37.75 BitFenix Prodigy M Arctic White MicroATX Mini Tower £74.59 PCorsair 430W ATX12V £42.71 Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer £11.98

Thank you!

So I guess there's not much between them in everyday uses which the PC will be used for. Can I also ask for your views on the two motherboards, please? I'm beginning to think I should perhaps be thinking about the positives and negatives of the motherboard more than the CPU

The socket 1150 will provide a little more longevity in terms of future-proofing. You can upgrade the CPU from current 1150 offerings or to a Broadwell series one when they are released later this year if you want/need to improve its performance. The 1150 motherboard also has a PCIe 3.0 slot. Here is a side-by-side comparison showing their respective features:

Unfortunately the current LGA1150 mobos will not support Broadwell. Same socket, but some compatibility problems requiring new motherboards.

Given the performance of the G3220 in a budget build I think it's a great choice, I just made it myself. It still allows upgrading through the best of the Haswell CPUs later on if desired.
