Considering an upgrade; need advice

So, back in early 2010, I built a desktop with some new components and some components scavanged from a 2005 pre-built Dell desktop. At this point, I'm considering an upgrade. I use the computer mainly for working from home (documents, internet research, etc.) so nothing difficult; but I do play some games (again, nothing too intense or recent although I bought Skyrim during the Steam sale - because I was curious - and I've found it runs quite poorly). So my question is 1) is there some obivous cheap upgrade that I can make (think ~$250) that would up my performance or 2) if not and I just need to start over, what all should I get for ~$750 (I already have Windows, so no need to include that).

My current specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Asus P5N-D motherboard
4gb DDR2 RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9500GT

The case was a Raidmax Smilodon ATX-612WBP. And I have this as the DVD burner (which I assume I can continue to use?).

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!

What were the "new parts" you bought?

Could you also give us these parts:
Hard drive
PSU

You can probably reuse the case, hard drive and optical drive tbh none of the other parts are really worth re using :/

I think that all of those parts listed were "new" (except the RAM and the hard drives). The hard drive definitely needs to be replaced.

The PSU is the 500w piece that came with the case.
