Better performance and graphics at 1600x900 than at 1920x1080 (GTX660 Ti on a 23 " Monitor.).

As stated in the title I am getting all round better performance and graphics at that resolution than at 1920x1080. For example, at max settings on BF4 at 1600x900 I am able to get 50-60 fps. However, the game still looks just as good as it does on max settings at 1920x1080 and there is no severe FPS drop.
Is there any logical explanation for this? By the way, it is still full-screen and the image doesn't look stretched.

Solution
Well let's look at this in terms of pixel density, which is what will really determine the clarity of the picture. On a 23" monitor, the PPI of 1920x1080 would be 95.78. The PPI of 1600x900 on the same size monitor would be 79.82. So a 1600x900 has a little over 75% the pixel density of 1920x1080 on a 23 inch monitor. This may be noticeable when reading text on the screen, but I can see how the difference would be minimal while gaming, especially when Anti-aliasing is enabled.
That is because 1600x900 is in the same aspect ratio as 1920x1080. That means that it won't appear stretched, but it will look slightly fuzzier when you get up close to it. You are getting more performance because the GPU would have to render ~500 more pixels with 1920x1080 than 1600x900. So, the GPU has to do less work.

It supports full HD. I just find it odd because I gain at least 30 FPS minimum on the larger maps (with full anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering) while from the looks of it, the game looks just like it does at 1920x1080. I

I understand the FPS gain, but I'm not getting the 'fuzzier' image which I assumed I would get.

Okay, i've tried other games now such as Skyrim and Rome 2 and it's exactly the same situation: Better performance yet still just as good visuals.

From the looks of things, this is probably the most logical explanation although I would think that I could notice that kind of difference. I mean, I have zoomed in on barrels, tanks, character models etc etc and I can't see an iota of difference. However, now that you mention the text, it is ever so slightly blurrier. Thanks anyway...
