Valve Wants Movies, Music on SteamOS, Controller Changed

I dislike the change to the controller - the touchscreen could have been so useful for so many things, and it was what really made this thing stand out. Now there isn't that much distinguishing it from other machines.

""We're working with many of the media services you know and love. Soon we will begin bringing them online, allowing you to access your favorite music and video with Steam and SteamOS,""I don't understand. steamOS is open source, won't these companies just make their own apps for linux if/when steamOS gets popular enough? or maybe valve is just encouraging them to do this sooner rather than later so they can use this as a marketing ploy.

Netflix is a must. That's the killer app. I'm not sure how many people realize the babysitting potential of cartoon shows on Netflix. Get the moms onboard, cause the dads already want it.

If Valve wants to be successful, they need to bring even more freedom. If I can listen to my music and video files, then we are going to be in big business. Also, they need to allow mouse and keyboards for their OS.

mouse and keyboard will obviously be supported if not already. as for music, Im not entirely sure because of licensing issues with mp3 and wav. as well as video, so some of these features might not be available immediately, but there are many linux apps that will most likely work and will play all your music and videos.

its not a generic controller. the changes mentioned here refer to the center touch screen. I think they figured the touch screen would be too expensive and bothersome for the market. now Instead of looking like a cool weird controller, now it will look like a weird controller with some ugly d pad and buttons in the middle. the 2 touchpads are still on it.

From the description in the article it sounds like they are replacing the touchpads with a dpad and buttons? Or if not it sound like the thing is going to look like an PS3 controller with touch pads where the analog sticks are?

its closer to what the wii u pro controller is like, the touchpads on the upper side, and the D-Pad/Buttons bellow

I hope they dont think anyone will play a fps with their little touchpads. That and a huge lacking of other buttons makes it terrible for such games. The xbox controller is what they should be looking at if they want to make something that will work with an FPS. Im sure keyboards and mice will work fine but we are talking about sitting on a couch trying to relax.

You can load drivers for other controllers... this is still linux we're talking about...

And I don't know about you, but playing an fps? I want a mouse and keyboard, and I don't want to be lazily relaxing - I would pick other games that work better with a controller for that.

"The touch screen was removed from the Steam controller."AKA"We want to make as much money as possible so now that you're interested we can remove the costly stuff to make more $$$"P.s. I already have Music and Video on my computer, laptop and tablet. Go shove Steam OS up your rear Gabe.

"We're working with many of the media services you know and love. Soon we will begin bringing them online, allowing you to access your favorite music and video with Steam and SteamOS"So, is this a specialised App creation issue, or are they just incapable of having a web browser to go to Netflix? Surely it can't be the latter otherwise not having a web browser would be a deal breaker for just about 100% of users

Keyboards and Mouses are supported in SteamOS since day one.The two main touchpads in the controller are still there.Only thing changed is center touch screen that was replaced by a dpad and also some retouches in the buttons.

From what I understood They'll be replacing the touchscreen with more familiar controls. That's OK. I don't know if touchscreen would be better than dedicated tactile buttons. I think it could be a good addition but not necessarily a good replacement. My main point though is the existence of the Steam Box as a whole. It seems to be just a glorified HTPC. Any and all of it's functions can be done with existing software/equipment. For people that don't like ti tinker with their PC's, an Xbox or PS4 would be enough. Anybody else would probably prefer to simply build their own for a good bit less of money.

All hype aside for SteamOS itself, Valve itself can't lose if gaming PC sales go up. If people use SteamOS they will sell games. If people dump SteamOS and use Windows, they will sell games. I personally don't think SteamOS will take off, but every extra gaming PC sold should give Valve serious bank.

it's not Valve losing that I'm concerned about, it's what Valve will do to 'win'.

I agree that I don't see SteamOS take off in a big way, but to push it, if Gabe wants to throw a pissy fit, they can make say 5-10 future valve titles SteamOS exclusive... we can hate it all we want, you and I both know we'll be dual-booting SteamOS if that day comes
