You can confirm by testing it with "WD Data LifeGuard Diagnostic for Windows": http://support.wd.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&sid=3&lang=en If it's failed, only a data recovery specialist can rescue any data from it - - very expensive. You must never save important data on only one hard drive. At least two hard drives should contain the same data at all times.
