Hello everyone;

I've recently noticed that my current system can no longer run the games coming out e.g Arma 3, Battlefield 4 etc...(and Star Citizen for the future )
So, I did some hunting around figuring out a new system that will suit my needs without being stupidly expensive and this is what I came up with:

Motherboard: AsRock X79-EXTREME6 (LGA-2011)
Memory: Patriot: 8GB DDR3 1600 Memory
CPU: Intel Quad Core i7 4820K 3.70Ghz
HDD: Seagate 2TB SATA3
SSD: Fujitsu SATA3 128GB
Graphics Card: 2GB Radeon R9-270
PSU: SHAW 80PLUS GOLD 550W Power Supply
OS:Microsoft Windows 8.1 64bit
Screen: 27” AOC E2752VH

Notes: Some key things I would really like to know is:
- How future proof is this system? (easily upgraded?)
- Windows 7 or 8?
-R9 270 or 270X?

Would greatly appreciate any feedback, opinions, recommendations etc, please remember that I'm trying to keep the costs down and also keep it future proof as possible.

Downgrade cpu+mobo
Upgrade gpu

I5-4570/4670
H87 motherboard

Or

Fx 8320/8350
970/990 motherboard

For gpu, since amd prices went up, get gtx 770/760
Or if you realy want amd, get r9 280x

Agree with above post as that system will be difficult to upgrade due to motherboard socket. Cpu i5 4670k or Xeon 1240 v3 , i5 if you want to OC Xeon if not. So any Z87 mobo + one of those cpus mean you can buy a stronger gpu. I suggest gtx 760 atleast for this system :)

They are its just in gaming systems the lga-2011 socket is usually overkill and kept for high end rendering machines and are over the top for gaming machines. Lga-1150 socket processors such are perfect for gaming and lower end rendering. The xeon 1240 v3 I suggested is effectively an i5 4670 with hyperthreading. There's3 cpus i suggest you look at: i5 4670k, xeon 1230/40 v3 or i7 4770k. They go in price order and only the K processors can be overcloxked

In the long run would it really matter if I changed over to 1150?
I'm also (in the future) going to be upgrading the Graphics card to a 280 or 290, this is just to play BF4 and Arma 3 now. It seems to me that the 4820K should be able to do its job... or am I missing something?
New to building.

EDIT: Anything wrong with over the top? :D

There's nothing wrong with over the top just often best pumping money into strong GPU rather than strong CPU in terms of gaming performance right now you have an ok GPU with insane CPU. Would you not prefer Good CPU+Insane GPU< more fps

Well, since the 270 can play the games I want to play, I'll grab either the 280 or 290 later this year. Thanks for the help Ashy :)

No problem, if you feel the 270 plays at a standard you desire I possibly wouldn't even both purchasing a 280/290 until release nvidia their new maxwell cards (the higher end ones not 750ti)

take i5-4570/4670 or fx 8320/8350
performance improvement with i7-4820k/-4770k is not big now and in future.
better spend money into a better gpu right now.
r9 280x/ gtx 770 will do the job very well.
