What Home Security System Do You Use?

I am presently running A GE alarm system we picked up from Lowes, that's easily added to and has turned out to be much more capable and impressive that I first thought it would be.

It uses wireless technology for the sensors to the main controller communication, and has some of the loudest sirens yet of any alarm system we've used in our home.

It's not a monitored alarm system as far as monitored by some company services but it's just to warn us if someone breaches a door or window.

We also run 360 degrees of video surveillance around our home perimeter with night vision capability.

That can be monitored by any of our smart phones, it's purpose is to see what's going on outside the home before trouble even gets to the door.

I'm running 8 LTS weather proof cameras all computer monitored using a Q-See PCI-E 4 DVR add in card in a computer built just for the video surveillance.

The cameras are motion sensors as well, and automatically record outside activity, the motion sensitivity can be set to avoid small animal detection.

The computer is running 2 Terabytes of HDD storage and can record as high of quality as possible video capture for an entire week without interruption.

We live in a high crime area, that's why we have these systems, so what type alarm systems do you have in your homes besides the usual joke of a Smith & Wesson?

Whatever! :pfff:

Trying to have a descent conversation in here is a joke I guess!

Edit: It would be nice if Toms had a home Security Section, so serious responses and shared information would be helpful to others.

A dog is zero protection as long as he loves a good steak laced with whatever is needed to make the dog a zero threat!

So a dog as protection is a joke, to anyone that knows how to get around it!

We've run various alarm systems for at least 10 years and added video surveillance after moving out in the country so our video surveillance has been in operation now for approximately 5 years.

Computer wise powering our surveillance system we're on the second rebuild of it, but as a backup we bought a DVR recording system to replace the computer the next time it fails.

Like I said the video surveillance is to see an intruder before he or she reaches the home, once they breech our home?

Well they'd be better off if they didn't!

Actually, IMO, dogs are a good security system...
I agree with you, anyone know how to get around.
BUT, a robber with minimum of intelligence will choose a house where he doesn't here something barking in.

(My case won't be intersting. i only have a key to lock the door. Mostly, this door is locked when i'm outside or sleeping... and when i don't forget it. If a robber comes in, he only has two steps to walk in the house to get checkbooks, money, car keys with car card... so i'm not in trouble... i have an insurrance.)

The good old security guard which patrols 24 hours per day on the premises.

Hardwired each sensor back to a control terminal with land line and cell coverage, (if it's monitored?), would be the best solution because wireless can be jammed and telephone lines can be cut, thus the need for the cell phone monitoring communication.

Unfortunately in my case all the wiring would have to be exposed or go to a major expense to hide it.

Anyone building a new home should seriously consider that option being wired in from the beginning, if they would be needing a alarm system.

Thanks for at least a good half of a response! :)

I use a company called Vector Security. Sensors on all exterior doors and windows, including fire/smoke detection. $50/month and all hardware is free as long as I keep a sign out front which is a great deterrent in an of itself TBH.

Amazingly the sign does help!

Is your system all hardwired?

Actually what we have is just an early warning system to alert us to a home breach, if we are home, that's just enough warning to alert us to grab the first offensive weapon to defend ourselves!

If we're not at home that's what homeowners insurance is for, as material things can be replaced, unfortunately that cannot replace any animals that may be hurt or killed in a robbery action.

So there is no fool proof home security system, just an alert to the action taking place, as even monitored systems can be disabled, phone lines can be cut or disconnected if not at the home at the phone terminus down the street!

So home security is really an illusion, backed up by in my case by a gun in almost every room!

So there it is! :)

You may want to put up a sign announcing that your property has active audio and video. No joke, I know cases that got thrown out of court even with audio/video evidence because the "suspect" didn't know their actions were recorded or expectations of privacy. I think it's a local ordinance, so hopefully your city doesn't have stupid laws on their books.

I have a raspberry pi hooked up to a motion sensing camera and a cheap USB toothpick launcher.

I was hoping it would be able to shoot down the Summer flies.

It totally doesn't work... which would be consistant with the other toys I get from hanging around Linux geeks.

Summer Flies are really fast!

The Toothpick launcher is slow, you might need to program a 15% lead on the Flies before launching!

Just Saying! :)

Welcome to Toms Rebecca! :)

That's one of the best of the best, with the cell phone connection they cannot cut your phone line leaving your system useless, I'm sure eventually they'll figure out how to jam the cell phone signal but that's a ways off, at least where I live.

Did you see the news about the woman that defended her two sons while her husband was away with an assault rifle he taught her to use, three hoodlums kicked in her rear door and entered the home but she had already seen them outside on her surveillance cameras.

The cameras caught it all the guys entered the home like macho bad, and ran out like screaming idiots, she fired 3 times the first shot into the wall to scare them, which did, they ran out.

One idiot started to go back in with a pistol?

A Fake Pistol?

I thought running was the first sane thing they opted to do out of fear!

He must have totally lost his macho mind and went babbling idiot trying to reclaim some of his lost macho with a fake pistol?

She fired 2 more shots, not aiming to kill just to scare, and the guy about killed himself slipping on the ice on the steps, and bolted like a scared deer!

The cops got them, and confirmed their ID from the surveillance camera footage! :)

All's well for that family! :)

Seriously, guys... how many home invasions per year in your country ?

I'm starting to think those stories are bullshits written buy home security sellers, or pro-guns organisations.

Now, when you talk with a pro-gun, he will always justify himself with a home-intrusion story.... if all those stories are true (maybe they are... and maybe i have a caudal fin), you live in a more dangerous country than Afghanistan.

The countries entire listing of home invasions is irrelevant to the concentration of where one actually lives in that country when you sometimes take the approach you take, it might be relevant for you to consider that size wise, France, could be set inside Texas!

And Texas could fit within Alaska Twice Over, meaning our entire country mass is a lot bigger than Yours!

http://www.wisegeek.com/how-big-are-the-states-in-america.htm

So No Offense groponce, because I do like you, but sometimes you come across with a plate of ignorance!

Your entire country is miniscule to the size of the United States, and the problems we have as well, and be thankful for it Sir!, instead of thumbing your nose at the situations we incur and insinuating they're falsely created for some other stupid reason!

Present that BS claim to those people killed in their homes during a home invasion, or their surviving family members!

Actually, this IS an offense. And i'm really upset.
I went to school, i don't need a geographic lesson.
I'm not that stupid, i know the size of my country. I'm not making comparaison between your country size and mine.

"Je donne mon avis non comme bon mais comme mien".
Montaigne.

What you can translate by: " i give an opinion not as the good, but as mine". You should do the same, instead of insulting me.

Country size has nothing to do in the subject. France has 3x more people than Texas, and we don't have as much criminals as you pretend to have. (when the largest population density should make it worse for us)
Problem here is not the size, but the people.

If you think a little you will realize that all the stories you mention have the same frame.
There is always one wife (with or without children), and villains who want to rape her. Always a happy end, thanks to guns.
All that's missing in these stories is Jason Statham.

So what's the point? i don't know.
Maybe your country is not safe.
Maybe your fellow citizens are uncivilized barbarians.
Or maybe, i'm right and part of those pathos story are bullshits and it works because you don't think.
Make your choice.

Criminal training facility, That's a good name for it as you're 100% correct that's exactly what's going on!

We should send our prisoners to labour camps.

I mean like who needs to have quarries with machines when you could use free human labour.

Or we could have huge textile factories that employ prison workers.

Feed them on an output basis.

Empty their personal bank accounts to pay for said textile factory.

We can all make ignorant statements I've made plenty here at Toms!

My comment was not meant to degrade your competence as you are a very smart and intellectual individual, I give you highest credit for that!

Sometimes you come across as prejudiced against Americans and it would seem we're used to it by now but it still stings sometimes!

At one time France had high regard for America, or we wouldn't have the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor.

I know times have changed and the American government has made some totally ignorant mistakes, and seem to keep making them?, but the American people themselves are not the problem, please try to at least consider that.

Back to the original subject:

I live in South Carolina and the job situation here is horrible there's literally a minimum of 100 showing up for each job opening, so crime is increasing everyday, as the unemployed figure is lowering much slower here than the media is announcing.

The gang element is largely responsible for the home invasions but they're not stealing to feed their hungry children they're stealing to finance their drug use, and the humans living in these homes are expendable to them.

So my alarm system is actually just to give me enough leeway to get my hand on my pistol to blow away whoever kicks in my door, so we do live in dangerous times here, and it's not some fabricated pipe dream as my cousin 1/4 mile away has been robbed twice, but it happened when they weren't home Thankfully!

That was before he got his own alarm system, and his own pistol to protect his family, so this is not news media hype, it is raw reality!

We used to live in a time no one even locked their doors, that time is long gone!
