We are baptising our child the end of February. and would like to get the couple that is baptising our son a digital camera as a gift. Usually a compact system camera. Our price range is around $300. I would have published this in the mirorless part of the forum but I am always in the Nikon section of the forum and believe in everyone's thinking here in this particular part of the forum. The camera does not require to be a Nikon. I do not have any understanding what so ever with these kinds of cameras and would like some information on what to buy.

Thanks :)

Hi ayg - this looks like the same question posted here. If so, and you're now looking at $300 instead of $400, my answer will be a little different.

Over on the other forum, your location said Toronto, so I'll offer options in Canadian Dollars. You may want to take a look at:

- Canon EOS M with 22mm lens - $356 - this is a little above your budget limit, but is a great camera for the money with a sensor size the same as a standard DSLR. Comes with an external flash.

- Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm lens (Black) - $329 - this camera has a 1" sensor and produces great photos. With an adapter, compatible with the full range of Nikon lenses.

- Nikon 1 J1 with 10-30mm lens (Red) - $299 - red version of the camera above.

These cameras are great little mirrorless cameras, but they are all on closeout because Nikon and Canon hasn't had the market success they might have hoped for in this segment. With these cameras, and relatively inexpensive adapters, your friends will have access to the full range of Canon or Nikon lenses if they decide to upgrade in the future.

I hope this is helpful,

Bill
