Hi,

I have an eVGA GTX660 3GB card right now, running with an Intel i5-2500k on a 1680x1050 display. Noticing some games like Far Cry 3 at high/ultra settings aren't getting 60fps. I'm debating if I should upgrade to a nVidia GTX770 2GB or Radeon 280x 3GB. Good chance I'll be updating my display as well to at least a 1920x1080.

Just wondering if I should hold off until the next generation of cards? Sounds like the nVidia 800 series is 9-10 months away.

If I did upgrade, I'd like the card to last me a good 2 years, unlike this GTX660 which I've had for maybe 1 year. Also, I don't know if I should spring for a 770 with 4GB? Is that kind of future proofing necessary with the next gen console ports?

Thanks for the advice!

I would expect to see an increase of 15-25 Fps in games with the new 700 series having GPU boost 2.0. The Gtx 770 is Equivalent And in some cases faster than a Gtx 680 so the upgrade would be well worth the money.

at 1080p you will notice a big difference as the 660 will struggle to max the upper tier of graphics games while the 770 will max everything. The 280x is also a good option if it is the same price as the 770 and a quality manufacturer. They are very similar in performance.

As for 4gb vs 2gb, the 4gb version is only necessary if you plan to SLI 2 of them at high resolutions, which you don't seem to plan to do. You will not see a performance difference with 1 770 between the 2gb and 4gb, so go with a 2gb.

I would wait to worry about it when you upgrade your screen as the 800 series is the next step in architecture and might be worth waiting a month or 2, but if you gotta buy now get a 770.

Upgrading to a GTX770 would certainly be a noticeable improvement. Even though the 600 series cards are far from obsolete, they are out of date. The 770 would be a great upgrade.

As woltej1 said, you should only get a version with extra VRAM if and only if you are using either very high end resolutions (pretty useless until past 1440p), or you are planning on using NVidia Surround (Multi-monitor gaming) which uses much more real estate and would take advantage of extra VRAM.

If it is urgent, upgrade now and it should last 2-3.5ish years, if you would like to wait for the 800 series to roll around that is not a bad idea either. Personally I am about to get a pair of 780Tis but simply because I am planning to run NVidia Surround on 3 1080p monitors. Now that you mention the idea, I might wait too for the 800 series.

Hope that helped a little, good luck!

yes, 770 is way better. 4GB only useful with 770 crossfire, able to drive 3x 1080 monitors at max settings, otherwise 2GB ok.
