I am building a PC predominantly for gaming and I would like advice on which monitor to buy. My budget is around £250 but i could stretch to a bit more if the quality justifies it.
What is the best for gaming TN or IPS? also does 120hz make a difference when compared to 60hz? I have an nvidia graphics card (gtx 780) and i read about the nvidia lightboost removing motion blur in 2d mode on 120hz screens would this warrant the ste

I would suggest you BenQ, it is one of the best choices always for Monitors.
This one has 120 Mhz refresh rate so it would be perfect for gaming !!!

Like you said, if you would stretch a bit, I would recommend you to go with ASUS

Contrast ratio is irrelevant as it varies manufacturer to manufacturer, and yes, you literally cannot detect a difference between 6000MHz and 60MHz as long as it stays at 60. Your eyes can't take in information that fast to detect it. But it can see the pixels on a screen if the resolution is low.

There will be a wide difference if you play games on a 60Mhz monitor and 120 Mhz monitor. Yes there will be !! If you have 60 fps on 60Mhz monitor you will have above 100 fps in 120Mhz with the GPU 780 which OP has mentioned

You physically cannot perceive an change above 60fps, as I have said before, 120MHz, 144MHz are for 3D movies, in games, you cannot tell a difference, the changes happens so fast your eyes are not even physically capable of telling a difference.

I know it is over the budget I quoted but is the BenQ XL2420T a good monitor as i was seriously considering it. Does it hold any advantage over the 2 monitors you suggested?

Monitor for money !!!
it was one of the top 10 monitors last year
If you wish to spend that much I would have suggested you this instead of XL2411
