My First Build - Seeking advice. $800

Hello all,

I am currently in the process of choosing parts for a PC that will be mainly used for schoolwork and light gaming (exc. BF4). I intend to add to this over the coming years, but to start out with I am considering these parts:

Processor: Intel Core i3-4130. $135.00
Motherboard: ASRock Fatal1ty. $122.00
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X 4 gb. $58.00
Power Supply: Corsiar VS650. $79.00
Graphics Card: Gigabyte R9 270x OC w/ BF4. $269.00
Case: Thermaltake Overseer RX-I. $145.00
(All prices are in AUD and are correct at the time of publishing)

All parts are likey to be brought through CPL Computers. I have an $800 AUD budget as it stands. One thing I will not be changing is the graphics card.
I thank all that contribute towards my project and I look forward to reading your advice.

Make sure you have two sticks memory. Memory works better if you have two sticks.

performance>aesthetics. why 150$ case on a 800$ budget? that's easily a 770 in this build.. also go with amd for this price range fx 6350>that i3. you will be disappointed when you go to fire up bf4 for the first time and come to find out that the 270x can't handle it on the higher settings.

Here is an idea for an AMD FX-8350 eight core system, with good performance in general use in mind. The FX-8350 has about the best cost /performance ratio of any CPU.

These are US prices (Newegg) so if you're down under, it will cost more. If there are savings to be made, the graphics card is an obvious place to economize, for example, a GTX 650 2GB is $175, there are some good values in Radeons, and there are some decent cases in the $60 range such as Antec and Corsair (and those also can be a bit more interesting looking than the very plain Lian Li).

If the budget is not extremely tight, you might consider having 16GB of RAM.

All this totals up to $796.00.
Also, something I didn't mention before.
I do not need to buy the following:
A Storage device. I have an OCZ Agility 3 240gb ( Do not worry about a HDD, I have a spare one floating around)
An Optical Drive. I have an LG Blu-ray Burner.
An OS. I have purchased Windows 7 Ultimate ( Weirdly enough got a refund for no apparent reason.)

The GTX 760 will perform better than the R9 270X if you can find it at a lower price.

The only problem is that I'm in Australia, so everything is around - minimum - 50% more expensive. The best I could find is a GTX 660, HD 7870 or a GTX 650 Ti.

Also, I have another query. Would I still be able to run my Gigabyte R9 270x OC 2gb card in a PCIe 2.0 port, or do I have to spend a few bucks to hunt for one with PCIe 3.0?

You will be fine with a R9 270X then.

Yes the R9 270X will work with your motherboard.
