I'm planning to change my radeon hd 6850 to a hd 7970 but i'm uncertain if its really worth the money. Also, I'm not even sure my PC can handle it because it's 3 years old

Here are my specs:

core i5 2500K
8 Gb of RAM
Coolermaster GX-750
Motherboard: Asus P8Z68-V LX

Your power supply should have no problem with a 7970, it's more than a double up of performance over the 6850

You have the 2500k which is still about on par with a modern i5, and it's overclockable so that's a big plus too, it's worth it

Quite good timing I think, there hasn't been a major performance increase over Sandy Bridge in the past few generations of Intel chips

whats your budget? you surely see improvements. btw is the 7970 brand new or used?. if new why not 770.

I have an unlimited budget (well sorta, anymore than 800$ card is wayyy to much for my gamig necessities) and I want a new card, I bought an old one from a trusted friend long ago and I don't know what he did with but it was unusable. Is the 770 better?

At this current time a 770 is a better buy since AMD card prices have gone way up, you could go all out and buy a 780 too, your 2500k should be fine with that too, if not with a small overclock

The 780 is really tempting, but I think I will settle with the 770, my wallet thanks you haha! Will I still need to overclock my 2500K (it's still at the manufacturer's speed, I didn't feel the need to touch it)?

Nope, it should be fine with a 770 at stock clocks, you could invest in an aftermarket cooler and overclock for your next GPU upgrade
